Estimates are based on the first serial number recorded for each year by the manufacturer and may be off by a year or two near the boundaries. For the most precise dating, use the manufacturer’s own lookup tool linked against each brand.

Upright Action
Vertical strings; the hammer travels sideways toward the string. Gravity alone won't return the hammer to rest — a small spring plus the bridle tape do that job. Wornum's 1826 design is essentially what every modern upright still uses.
Grand Action
Horizontal strings; the hammer rises and strikes from below. Sébastien Érard's repetition lever (1821) is the part that gives a grand its signature responsiveness — letting the hammer reset for fast repeated notes while the key is still partly depressed.
